IT’S TIME TO
Who we are?
We are a group of Hong Kong Mahjong lovers and cultural keepers, coming together to protect and share a disappearing tradition. We are a non-profit organization based in the UK, dedicated to promoting the cultural and philosophical roots of Hong Kong-style Mahjong.
We believe that Mahjong is more than just a game — it’s a philosophy, a social art, and a path to mental and emotional growth.
Our Mission
Our mission is to preserve, promote, and pass on the living cultural heritage of Mahjong — not only as a game, but as a way of thinking and a bridge between people.
We teach Mahjong to everyone — regardless of age, background, or culture — to share its deep roots, train the mind, nourish the heart, and reconnect people through face-to-face play.
We offer both online courses and in-person classes, so that learning Mahjong can fit into anyone’s lifestyle, wherever they are.
Our Core Values
1. Cultural Preservation
Mahjong is a living treasure. We teach the game, but we also teach the wisdom and values behind it.
2. Face-to-Face Connection
We value real human presence. Mahjong brings people back to each other.
3. Mental Training
Mahjong improves memory, focus, and strategy. It’s one of the most joyful brain exercises you can have.
4. Emotional Awareness
Mahjong teaches humility in winning and grace in losing. It helps us stay balanced in a changing world.
5. Joyful Community
Our school is a warm, welcoming space where people find laughter, belonging, and support.
What We Believe
Mahjong is a mirror of life.
Everyone can learn Mahjong — and grow from it.
Gentle and deep teaching lights the fire of true learning.
A Mahjong table is a place for healing and rediscovery.
We don’t just teach how to win — we teach how to live with more presence and joy.
Mahjong is not only a game

Circles / 筒
Meaning: "Barrel" or "coin"
Symbolizes: Actual copper coins
The tiles are decorated with circles, which represent round Chinese coins (with square holes in the center).

Bamboo / 索
Meaning: "String" or "rope"
Symbolizes: Strings of coins
In ancient times, coins had holes in the middle and were strung on ropes — often in units of 100 or 1,000.
Bamboo was associated with lightness, flexibility, and elegance — a respected material in Chinese culture.
Characters / 萬
Meaning: "Ten thousand"
Symbolizes: Cash currency
Origin: Based on ancient banknotes or coin bundles where one "萬" = 10,000 copper coins.
In Chinese culture, “萬” is also a symbol of abundance or completeness — often used in wishes for wealth or longevity.

How can I begin to describe my time with Poveda... It was simply life-changing! I always imagined that Bali would be a breathtaking destination, but thanks to Poveda, I was able to not just experience the culture, but have once-in-a-lifetime memories. I got so much more than I ever anticipated from my holiday.
