Terms of Use

The terms for using the Mahjong Academy website and courses.

About us

mahjong.academy is run by Mahjong Academy CIC, a community interest company registered in England and Wales (company number 17435406), founded in Cambridge in 2026 by Chris and Carina.

A community interest company is a company set up for the benefit of a community. Its assets are locked by law and cannot be distributed for anyone's private gain. Our purpose is to set out how Hong Kong Mahjong is played, and the culture around it, as free courses anyone can learn from.

Accepting these terms

By using the website, creating a student account or using the courses, you agree to these Terms of Use.

If you do not agree, please do not register an account or continue to use the student-only features.

Courses and cost

Level 0 through Level 1 are free and open to everyone, with no registration. From Level 2 onwards the courses are open to registered students only, and registering is free. Further courses will follow.

If we ever offer paid events, products or services, we will set out the price, cancellation arrangements and any other terms before you pay.

Age and student accounts

Registering as a student is for those aged 18 and over, and it is free.

When you register: you must give a working email address that belongs to you; you must not use anyone else's email address; you must not impersonate another person; and you must not pass your sign-in link or account access to anyone else.

You are responsible for taking reasonable care of your own email account and sign-in links.

You can change your details, request a copy of your data, or delete your account at any time by emailing hello@mahjong.academy — and from your student page once it is ready.

If you suspect somebody else has used your account, email hello@mahjong.academy straight away.

Course content and copyright

The videos, text, images, illustrations, quizzes, games, teaching materials and design on the website belong to Mahjong Academy, to the people who created them, or to other copyright holders.

You are welcome to use the course content for your own, non-commercial learning. Without our prior written permission, please do not: copy or republish substantial parts of the course; download, record or re-upload the videos; remove copyright or attribution notices; translate, adapt or turn the content into another course; sell, rent or use it commercially; present it as your own teaching material or work; or use automated tools to harvest the site or its content in bulk.

You are welcome to share links to the site or to a course page, and to tell other people about us.

Nothing here affects fair dealing, quotation, or any other right the law gives you.

Course feedback

You may leave feedback and ask us to consider publishing it on the website.

Feedback must be your own honest opinion; must not contain other people's private information; and must not be unlawful, insulting, threatening, discriminatory, infringing, fraudulent or promotional.

If you are happy for it to be public, we review it first and may then publish it showing your table name, the country or region you gave, and which of our activities you joined; your email address is never shown. Submitting feedback does not guarantee that it will be published.

We may correct obvious typing or formatting errors, but we will ask you first if we want to change the substance. If we want to use your feedback on Facebook, Instagram, in advertising, in print, or anywhere outside the website, we will ask you separately.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by email, and we will remove the versions under our control within a reasonable time.

Acceptable use

When using the website, you must not: engage in unlawful, fraudulent or harmful activity; attempt to reach other accounts, databases or systems without permission; get around access, security or course restrictions; upload or transmit viruses, malicious software or harmful instructions; interfere with the site or place an unreasonable load on it; use automated programs to harvest or copy material in bulk; test or exploit security weaknesses without our prior written permission; infringe anyone's privacy, copyright or other rights; or impersonate Mahjong Academy, another student or any third party.

If you find a technical or security problem, please tell us privately rather than exploiting or publicising it.

External services

We may link to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or other outside websites.

Those services are controlled by their own companies and governed by their own terms and privacy policies. We cannot control their content, their availability, or how they handle information.

Comments posted on Facebook or Instagram are not part of the Mahjong Academy website. We can manage or remove content on our own pages, but Meta may process or keep it independently.

The nature of what we teach

The courses are educational and for general information, and describe the Hong Kong mahjong that we teach.

Different regions, tables, clubs and families play by different rules. Before you sit down to play, it is worth agreeing the rules being used.

We take reasonable care that the content is accurate, but we cannot promise that everything is free of error at all times, suits every style of play, or meets your particular needs.

The courses are not legal, financial, gambling or other professional advice.

Running the site, and changes

We take reasonable care to keep the website and the courses running, but we cannot promise that the service will never be interrupted or go wrong.

We may: correct or update courses; add, rearrange or remove content; take the site down for maintenance or security work; change which levels require registration; and withdraw features or courses that are no longer offered.

Where a change materially affects registered students, we will give notice beforehand where it is reasonable to do so.

Suspending or closing an account

If we reasonably believe that you are under 18, are using someone else's email address, have seriously or repeatedly broken these terms, are endangering the site or other people, or are engaged in fraudulent, infringing or unlawful activity, we may limit, suspend or close your account.

Except where there is an urgent safety risk, a legal requirement or serious misuse, we will give notice first where it is reasonable to do so, and give you a chance to explain or put things right.

You may also delete your own account at any time.

Limits on our responsibility

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that the law does not allow to be excluded or limited, including death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, your statutory consumer rights, and anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.

The website and the courses are provided free of charge. So far as the law allows, we are not responsible for: problems caused by your own device, browser, network or an outside platform; interruptions outside our reasonable control; losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when you began using the site; or business losses arising from using a free course for commercial or professional purposes.

Nothing here affects rights you have under applicable law.

Privacy

We handle personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy, which explains what we collect, why, which providers we use, how long we keep it, and what rights you have.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as our courses, the website, our providers or the law change.

The latest version is always published on the website. Where a change materially affects registered students, we will tell you through the website or by email where it is reasonable to do so.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.

The courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over disputes relating to these terms. If you live elsewhere in the United Kingdom or in another country, you keep any mandatory consumer rights that local law does not allow these terms to exclude.
