Our Story

The Story of Mahjong Academy

Mahjong Academy CIC is a community interest company registered in England and Wales, founded in Cambridge in 2026 by Chris and Carina.

Our idea was simple: help people step away from their keyboards, sit around the same table, and connect face to face again.

Online learning is just the beginning.

Hong Kong Mahjong has many rules, scoring methods and traditions that can be difficult to learn from text alone. So we created a complete online course using videos, quizzes and games to make learning easier.

But the screen is only the beginning. Once you know how to play, close the computer, gather some friends around a table, or join us at Mahjong Friends Day — and enjoy Mahjong where it truly comes alive: between people.

Knowledge is free. Culture is for everyone.

As Mahjong travelled across generations, places and languages, some of its original meanings, traditions and philosophy became lost along the way. To many, it eventually became known simply as a gambling game.

We believe Mahjong is much more. It carries culture and history, connects people, and can even teach us something about ourselves.

That is why we preserve, organise and share what we know freely — so this cultural heritage can travel further and be passed on to the next generation.

All our online courses are free, for everyone.
